Amsterdam history has always been a renowned name in the world of history and played a vital role in the history of Netherlands.

Amsterdam was founded as a fishing village around thirteenth century. It was during the 15th century, Amsterdam underwent a rapid development, which laid the foundation for the Golden Age.

This period of 1585-1672 was considered as the golden age of Amsterdam, as some of the most historic buildings dates back to this period.

Amsterdam history - Recession and Decline
Talking about the history of Amsterdam, the year of 1672 witnessed a decline in the city’s prosperity. The golden age of Amsterdam came to a halt due to sudden attacks from the French and English sides.

Amsterdam failed to consolidate its property during this period, incapable of withstanding the predicament of the Republic. Amsterdam trade and fishing business came to a halt, after French occupied the city.

The situation was worsened with the blockaded by British. The large number of dwellings, historical assets, the Town hall and a large number of canal houses, which reflected city’s prosperity, were on the verge of collapse.

During the period of 1795 to 1813, Amsterdam suffered worst from the economic recession, a state of affairs reflected by the stagnation of the demographic development.

Several residential dwellings were left vacant and some even collapsed due to the lack of maintenance.

However, the period of 1830 - 1940 was marked by economic recovery and expansion. It was due to Industrial revolution that the development was much in vogue.

The Silver Lining Of Amsterdam History
In the 20th century, Amsterdam turned its back on the sea, extending its horizons and restyling itself as an industrial center. Rapid progress and development was marked in the pages of Amsterdam history.

Attention was showered on infrastructure and industrial growth. The escalating economic growth brought about a rapid population growth.

It was during this time Amsterdam restyled itself as an industrial center. Railway links were established, and Steel production received a boost.

Post war Amsterdam gathered itself quietly; it managed to consolidate its prosperity to determine its characteristic appearance.

People started demanding their rights and with the settlement of the consensus, progressive planning and adoption of social policies, Amsterdam became tolerant to all communities.

Eventually with the social, cultural and economic shifts, Amsterdam emerged as a spectacular city where tourists flocked in abundance to cherish glorious Amsterdam history and lively atmosphere.
