Designed by the city architect Hans Petersom, the building has some unique features. The decorated door had steps in the middle of the facade to function aesthetically. It opened on to the middle of the dinning room or chapel. The brick surrounded kitchen, where food was prepared for nearly 700 residents has a deep fireplace and huge cooking pots. However, shortage of space demanded renovation. As a result, the building was almost stripped of completely from inside and refurbished. The renovations in the 19th and 20th century took away a lot of originality from the interior layout of Amstelhof. Important Facts Hermitage Museum opens daily at 10 am and remains open until 5 pm everyday except 25 December and 1 January. The first and the second floors have three exhibition galleries with a total floor space of 500 square meters. The museum also boasts of an education workshop to provide introductions about the exhibitions. It can accommodate around 40 persons. The Hermitage Museum Amsterdam also has shops and cafe at the ground floor. The shops have a broad collection of literature, art cards gifts and other items.
