Amsterdam Red Light District

Where Enjoyment Knows No End

The prostitutes of red light district in Amsterdam are desperately bold in offering themselves as they sit beside windows on stools trying to attract the highest bidders of sex and beauty.

Window prostitution is in fact a primary means of livelihood for several women living in the red-light district and lanes of Amsterdam.

In Amsterdam (the capital city of Netherlands) prostitution is legal and is simply considered a way to earn money.
In the year 1996, taxation for prostitutes was introduced for the first time and from 2000 onwards both window prostitution and brothels have been legalized by the government of Netherlands.

The reasons behind this deliberate legalization were to bring about an overall improvement in the socio-economic condition of the prostitutes of Amsterdam, reduce crime rates and strengthen the regulatory system of the city.

Thus, based on such facts the red light Amsterdam district has become quite a known place.

The principal red light area of Amsterdam is known as the Walletjes, or Wallen (little walls), or commonly as Rossebuurt (red or pink neighborhood).

The area is discerned along the city’s two oldest canals, the Oudezijds Achterburgwal and the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. Both of them together are known as Burgwallen.

Other than Walletjes, Singel and Pijp are also quite notable prostitute areas of Amsterdam. Some tourists even enjoy visiting Alkmaar, which is a pleasurable tiny bazaar apart from being a cozy little red light quarter of the city.
Attraction towards the red light district in Amsterdam has increased manifold due to the rhythmic music and authentic restaurants like Café Pacifico, one of the first Mexican restaurants in whole of Europe.

In recent times, well maintained roads, restored façades and modern clients have abruptly transformed the appearance of this part of the town, which was once a speedy and dark lane

If you want to catch the vibes of the district in Amsterdam, you may choose to come at eleven at night. It is the time when you find this part of the city rollicking in full mood.

The neons of the district create that mystic yet attractive atmosphere where everything seems so exotic and exciting. Other than the red light district, you can even visit one of the theaters Casa Rosa (OZ Achterburgwal) and the infamous Moulin Rouge (Oudezijds Achterburgwal 5-7) to watch plenty of live sex shows.

What you should and should not do while visiting the red light district of Amsterdam

  • Always try to go in groups as a singular visit can attract several unwanted attention

  • Taking photographs of the occupied windows is strictly prohibited. So, don’t even try to do that.

  • There are many pick-pocketers in this part of the city. Therefore, be very careful while walking through swarming areas

Be sure to follow the rules and then no one can stop you from enjoying the pleasure of Amsterdam red light district.
