Van Gogh Museum
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, is a pilgrimage for every devout art lover.
The museum houses the largest collection of the original works by the pioneering force of Expressionism, Vincent Van Gogh.
On display in the Van Gogh Museum are some 200 paintings and 500 sketches, spanning the five distinct phases of the artist’s life and career: The Netherlands, Paris, Arles, Saint-Remy and Auvers-sur-Oise. The Van Gogh collection ranges from famous paintings like his first large-scale painting ‘The Potato Eaters’, his 1889 inspired artwork ‘Vase with Sunflowers’ to lesser-known artworks. A visit to the museum allows you to be a part of the artist’s fascinating development through the various phases. About 700 letters and some Japanese prints also find place in the Van Gogh collection. Exclusive artworks of Van Gogh’s contemporary painters and sculptors are among the other treasured collections of the museum. Paintings, graphic art and sculptures reflecting the distinctive popular genres of the period (1840-1920) – Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Salon and Symbolist art – presents you with the thrilling prospect of comparing Van Gogh’s works with those of his contemporaries. You will be delighted to know that many of these artworks are by artists (Ary Scheffer, Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin to name just a few) Van Gogh ardently followed. The Museum Building The main building of the museum (a glass structure designed by Gerrit Rietveld) threw open its gates for the visitors first time in 1973. The Exhibition Wing, designed by Kisho Kurokawa, was completed in 1999.
